Swap Shop

October 7, 2026

Swap Shop is a great idea that was started as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign to promote waste-free habits and recycling among the public.

What is a swap shop?
These are temporary centers where we can donate useful items from our homes that we do not currently need, and in return, we can collect what we need from other items there for free or at a very low cost. The principle behind this is "Don't throw away what is used, let's exchange it".

Main objectives of swap shop
Reduce waste: It prevents throwing away and burning of usable items.

Reuse: It makes an item useful for someone else by extending its life.

Financial relief: It provides necessary items to the needy without any money.

Environmental protection: It helps to conserve natural resources by reducing the purchase of new items.

Main items that can be exchanged here
Clothing: Good condition and clean clothes, children's clothes.

Books & study materials: Textbooks, storybooks, school bags, study materials.

Household products: Utensils, decorative items, small furniture.

Toys: Children's toys, sports equipment.

Electronics: Small electronic devices that are working.

How does the swap shop work?

Donation of items: The public can bring their good condition items to the swap shop. (Damaged or completely useless items will not be accepted here).

Inspection: These items are inspected and neatly classified under the leadership of the local self-government bodies (Panchayat/Nagara Sabha) or Harithakarma Sena.

Acceptance/Exchange: Those in need can choose suitable items from there.

In Kerala, such swap shops are organized under the joint auspices of local self-government bodies, Suchit Mission, Haritha Keralam Mission, and Harithakarma Sena.
